John McCullagh will join forces with a cause very close to his heart during the penultimate race weekend in the 2016 Porsche Carrera Cup GB at Silverstone (September 17-18), when his Inlec.com-backed 911 GT3 will proudly support #teamgeorge.
#teamgeorge was set up by friends and relatives after George Robinson suffered a life changing spinal cord injury playing rugby during a school tour to South Africa in July 2015. A family friend of John’s suffered a similar fate several years ago, and as a rugby-mad family, his sons Tom and Sam have both been on rugby tours as well – thankfully returning home fit and well each time.
Having learned about #teamgeorge on a recent business trip, John contacted the family with the idea of using the final two Carrera Cup GB race weekends to raise awareness and funds for the trust, which has been set up for George for his long-term welfare and to ensure he has a full and happy life. The Robinson family will be guests of honour at Silverstone on race day, and Porsche GB has kindly donated two VIP hospitality passes for the 2016 Carrera Cup GB season finale at Brands Hatch, which will be auctioned at an upcoming charity event.
For those who would like to make a donation to #teamgeorge, you are invited to do so via: www.teamgeorge.org.uk/donate
Having scored in all 12 rounds of the Pro-Am1 category so far this year, John is second in the series with four races remaining. The two races around the 1.64 mile Silverstone National Circuit will therefore be crucial, as John aims for more high-scoring podium finishes.
Race weekend starts on Friday 16 September with two Free Practice sessions, beginning at 09.00 and 13.30. Qualifying takes place between 12.05-12.35 on Saturday (17 September) where the grid for both races will be determined by the fastest two laps recorded during the 30 minute session. Two 28 lap races take place on Sunday (18 September), as Round 13 begins with a rolling start at 12.25 and Round 14 gets underway with a standing start at 16.30. Both will be broadcast on ITV4 and on www.itv.com/hub/itv4.
John McCullagh said: “Supporting #teamgeorge is something very close to my heart, as a close family friend suffered a similar fate to George at a similar age around twenty-five years ago. The good news is that he was tough, determined and had great medical care and support from family and friends and consequently made a pretty good recovery and leads full and happy life. As a family we are keen supporters of rugby and are closely linked with Darlington Mowden Park RFC – both our sons have played rugby and been on rugby tours, and we’re grateful that each time they have returned home safe and sound. There is an element of risk in most sports, and the motor racing track and rugby field can be a dangerous place – so we wanted to show our support to our ‘brothers’ and invite George and his family to be guests at the Carrera Cup GB race at Silverstone. It promises to be a great day out, and I’ll do my best to help celebrate the day with a podium result.”
George’s parents said: “George is displaying exceptional mental strength and fortitude in dealing with his injury. We are incredibly grateful and touched with the magnificent support, unity and spirit being given through #teamgeorge, it is a tremendous source of energy and strength for George and our family.”
