Sunday morning. It’s race day. I’m up early and have all the race gear ready for my first Porsche Carrera Cup GB race since September 2016. The pace through free practice on Friday & qualifying had consistently improved & I am happy with P13 on the grid and third in the ProAM1 class.
There was a huge sense of anticipation as I we were marshalled on to the grid and it seemed the crowd were up for it too. A few guests who joined me for the day said they’d queued for just over an hour to get in so we were playing to a full house.
The Redline Team is so experienced and clinical when it comes to the preparation, the car felt just perfect as worked our way around the 3-mile circuit on the Green flag lap before lights out & my first rolling start of 2017. We were definitely in for a cracking race!
Lights out and the roar of a full grid of Porsche 911 GT3 Cup cars filled the air. I managed to get a great start, staying out of trouble and made up one place into turn 1. My nearest rivals were REALLY on it and this wasn’t going to be an easy race…
Ex-BTCC driver Alex Martin and former Carrera Cup GB ProAm1 Champion Justin Sherwood were up from in first and second respectively in the ProAm1 class while Graeme Mundy was putting the pressure on in my rear view mirrors. However, just as I was beginning to establish a rhythm, the bright red Porsche Carrera GTS safety car came out after a couple of separate incidents where cars went off the track necessitating the temporary go-slow.
I didn't make the best restart to the race which allowed my rivals to steal a march on me & I didn't quite have the race pace to remedy that. I did however manage to get away from the chasing pack & finished the race in that all-important podium position on the first outing, which was a tremendous boost for both myself and the Redline Racing team.
