In the company of family, friends and guest of honour #teamgeorge, John McCullagh maintained his 100% finishing record in the 2016 Porsche Carrera Cup GB with two strong races at Silverstone in his Inlec.com-backed 911 GT3.
The results leave the 52-year old North Yorkshire driver tied for second in the Pro-Am1 category, with just the final race meeting at Brands Hatch (1-2 October) remaining.
John started from 4th in class as Round 13 got underway with a standing start. In hot and sunny conditions, 22 cars thundered into the opening Copse corner, with John making his way to the inside and holding position well. A five second penalty for exceeding track limits at Turn 4 dropped him to 5th at the end of the race.
It was cloudy and a lot cooler as Round 14 roared into action with a rolling start. In front of a very big Silverstone crowd, John made his way up to 3rd, before a Safety Car period intervened. John made a good re-start, but as the 28 lap race around the 1.64 mile Silverstone National Circuit progressed he couldn’t find the pace and finished 5th.
It hadn’t been the double podium finish that John wanted to give special guest George Robinson, but the two Silverstone results see John head to the final race meeting of the season tied on 97 points with arch rival Sean Hudspeth.
As for George, it was the first time that he’d attended a motor racing event and he enjoyed it enormously. A pair of VIP hospitality passes for Brands Hatch, kindly donated by Porsche GB, will be auctioned at an upcoming #teamgeorge charity event – and more information on #teamgeorge, including details on how to donate, are available on the www.teamgeorge.org.uk website.
John McCullagh said: “I had to work incredibly hard at Silverstone, but I never really found the pace that I needed to get to stand on the podium. We’re still bringing the car home in one piece, which is always good news, but we need to find a bit more pace and we’re going to prepare well for what will be a very important final race weekend in two weeks time at Brands Hatch.
“It’s always an enjoyable race weekend at Silverstone – and this weekend was no exception. I’ve had lots of family, friends and #teamgeorge down to support me, which has been fantastic. It’s made for another great Porsche Carrera Cup GB race weekend.”
